“No.” I shook my head. “But I should have. The signs were there. The way he ran this town like his personal fiefdom. The way people disappeared when they crossed him.”
She stared at me. “And you never told anyone?”
“Who was there to tell? Cole had the county prosecutor in his pocket. The judge. Half the deputies owed him favors.”
“So you just… waited?”
“I gathered information.”
“Where?”
“His garbage.”
Rachel’s eyes widened. “You went through his garbage?”
“Every Tuesday night for six months. His secretary empties his office trash at the end of the day. She dumps it in the bin behind the sheriff’s station.”
“And you found something?”
“Recibos. Los troncos. Nombres. Fechas.
The house sat quiet beneath the fading afternoon sky. Nothing looked out of place. No unfamiliar vehicles. No broken windows.
We moved through the front door together.
The living room looked exactly as we’d left it that morning. The coffee cups still sat on the table. A half-finished crossword puzzle lay beside Rachel’s chair.
I checked every room systematically. Bedrooms. Bathrooms. Closet spaces.
No one was there.
“Pack a bag,” I told Rachel. “Essentials only. Enough for three days.”
“¿A dónde vamos?”
“En algún lugar seguro”.
“Ethan—”
“Please. Just do it.”
She studied me for a moment, then nodded and disappeared into the bedroom.
Saqué mi teléfono satelital y llamé al capitán Ward.
The line connected after one ring.
“Commander.”
“Status update.”
“I’ve initiated the request. The response team is moving into position. They should be in the county within the hour.”
“Civilian assets?”
“Sheriff’s jurisdiction is being bypassed. Federal authority supersedes local in cases of suspected corruption involving interstate commerce.”
“Good.”
Ward paused. “There’s something else.”
“I’m listening.”
“Travis Cole made a call exactly four minutes after you left the diner.”
“How do you know that?”
The name sent a chill down my spine.
“Black Ridge is a local construction company.”
