Part 2:
Tomás did not look away from Mariana.
—What are you doing here?
She avoided answering. Instead of explaining why she was wearing a waitress uniform, eWaitress delivered the case with professional precision: 19 years old, severe reaction to nuts, 2 auto-injectors applied, approximate times and evolution of the patient.
Gael listened to every word.
Tomás finished reviewing Renata and looked at Mariana again.
—You’re still the best emergency nurse I’ve ever met.
The phrase changed the atmosphere.
Gael looked at Mariana’s wrinkled uniform, then her hands, and then at the paramedic. Suddenly he understood that this woman had not learned to react like that while working among tables.
Renata was placed on the stretcher and taken to the hospital. She survived.
But before the doors closed, Gael wanted to ask Mariana why a nurse with that experience was serving drinks during 14-hour shifts.
He didn’t get to do it.
Mariana gathered her things and left alone, without asking for money, favors, or recognition.
Hours later, when Gael discovered what had happened to make her leave nursing, he understood that helping her would come at a cost neither of the two expected.
