A los 74 años, me casé con una mujer 38 años más joven, luego mi ama de llaves me advirtió: “Te has quedado sin tiempo”.

“I loved you.”

That hurt more than anything else she said that evening.

Because part of me wanted desperately to believe there had once been something true.

Maybe there had.

People are rarely simple enough for total lies.

Perhaps Vanessa enjoyed our travels.

Perhaps she liked some of our evenings.

Perhaps there were moments when affection and greed occupied the same room.

It no longer mattered.

“I loved you too,” I said.

Her eyes filled.

Then I added, “That is why this hurts.”

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

“But love does not give you permission to erase me.”

My attorney informed her that she was no longer permitted to return to Ravenswood without arrangement because legal proceedings concerning financial fraud and elder exploitation were already underway.

She looked at me.

“You’re throwing me out?”

“I’m ending your control over my life.”

“This is because of your children.”

“No.”

I shook my head.
