Then a shaky inhale.
“They needed someone to blame before the audit reached the county office. Gavin saw too much.
He saw the investigator give my mother an envelope. He saw the neighbor outside the window.
After that, they said there was only one way to bury everything.”
The investigator paused the recording.
Nobody spoke.
Mitchell picked up the supplemental witness report again.
“He wasn’t a witness.”
Gavin looked at him.
“He was part of it.”
El investigador presionó el juego.
“My mother said if I loved Chloe, I would cooperate.
She said Gavin would get life, maybe less if he stopped fighting.
But then the prosecutor decided a death sentence made the case cleaner. A dead man cannot appeal forever.”
“Mom told me Gavin would die angry, but Chloe would live safe.
She said one child was better than three bodies.”
The room went cold.
Mitchell had seen cruelty before.
