Gabriel, call me NOW.
Then a third.
You scared Lucas by leaving him alone. My mother is furious.
Gabriel looked at the words until they lost meaning. Across the room, Lucas stared at the television without watching it.
Another call came.
Y luego otro.
Finally, Gabriel answered and pressed record.
“Columbus,” Gabriel said.
“You were supposed to be in Arizona.”
“The shipment was canceled.”
Una pausa.
It was tiny.
Apenas ahí.
But Gabriel heard the calculation inside it.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Candice asked.
“Why didn’t you tell me Lucas was alone?”
“He wasn’t alone. He’s sixteen. Don’t be dramatic. We stocked the house.”
– ¿Con qué?
– ¿Qué?
– ¿Qué le dejaste comer?
Otra pausa.
