I leaned against the wall.
“Look carefully,” I said.
At dawn, I found Lauren awake.
She was standing beside the window in Mary’s room, still wrapped in one of the hospital blankets, watching the city pale under the first light.
“Couldn’t sleep?” I asked.
She shook her head.
“Mommy makes toast in the morning.”
“What kind?”
“Too brown.”
I smiled faintly.
“Burnt?”
“No. Toasty.” She gave me a serious look. “Burnt is when the smoke alarm sings.”
“I see.”
Miró hacia atrás por la ventana.
“Will Mommy be mad that I talked to a stranger?”
“Se alegrará de que hayas encontrado ayuda”.
“You were a stranger.”
– Sí.
– ¿Todavía estás?
The question slipped under my ribs.
“I don’t know,” I said honestly.
“¿Te amó a ti?”
My throat tightened.
– Creo que sí.
Lauren asintió como si confirmara una teoría.
“Por eso guarda la imagen”.
I looked at her.
