Senator Harold Whitfield rose slowly from the front row, his expression unreadable, and walked toward Naomi with the deliberate, unhurried pace of a man who’d spent decades learning that the most powerful thing in any room is patience.
“Excuse me,” he said, extending a hand toward her. “I don’t believe we’ve formally met, though I recognize your face from a portfolio review three months ago. You’re Naomi Carrington. Hollow & Bloom.”
Naomi blinked, thrown for the first time since stepping out of that car. “Yes, sir. That’s me.”
“Whitfield Ventures has been one of your primary investors for the better part of a year now,” the senator said, loud enough that the guests nearest the front could hear every word. “I sat in on the board update myself last quarter. Your growth numbers are the best in our entire portfolio this cycle.” He paused, something shifting behind his eyes as the pieces visibly clicked into place. “Carrington. I should have made the connection sooner. Roland’s ex-wife.”
The courtyard had gone fully silent now, three hundred guests watching a conversation none of them had been prepared for.
“Senator Whitfield,” Roland said, stepping forward with the particular brightness of a man trying to steer a runaway situation back onto solid ground, “I don’t think you understand the context here—”
“That’s not possible,” he said. “I’d have known. My board would have told me.”
“Daddy, what is happening right now?” she asked.
“I’m finding out exactly what kind of man your fiancé is,” Senator Whitfield said, not unkindly, though the weight in his voice left no room for argument. “Five minutes before I was supposed to walk you down that aisle.”
“Roland told me his first marriage just didn’t work out,” Vanessa said, turning to him with something breaking open in her expression. “He told me you two grew apart. He never once mentioned children, Roland. He never once mentioned throwing a pregnant woman out into the street.”
“Vanessa, baby, it’s complicated,” Roland started.
“Don’t,” she said, holding up a hand. “Don’t ‘baby’ me right now. I need you to explain, in front of everybody standing here, why I’m only finding out today that I could have been raising somebody else’s twins as a stepmother without ever knowing they existed.”
Roland stood there in his three-thousand-dollar suit, in front of three hundred guests, his own bride’s father, and two four-year-olds who shared his exact eyes, and for the first time in longer than Naomi could remember, he had absolutely nothing to say.
Micah, tugging gently on Naomi’s hand, looked up at Roland with the open, uncomplicated curiosity only a small child could manage in a moment like that.
“Are you really our dad?” he asked.
“Yo soy. Siento que me haya tomado tanto tiempo descubrirlo”.
The wedding did not continue that day.
Vanessa pulled the plug herself, twenty minutes later, standing at the microphone meant for her own vows and instead announcing, with more grace than anyone expected under the circumstances, that the ceremony would not be proceeding, and thanking guests for their understanding as staff quietly began clearing chairs.
Senator Whitfield pulled Naomi aside before she left, Micah and Nora finally warming up enough to accept a piece of wedding cake from a bewildered caterer who didn’t know what else to do with three tiers of untouched dessert.
