Alejandro stayed by my side until I arrived at the emergency room. Hours later, he was still lying in a hospital bed when the door opened again, and my father burst into the room completely alone.
He was furious.
Before I could even understand why he had come back, he hit me and spat:
—Just tell your husband to buy the SUV.
No apology. No single question about whether I could breathe. Just the SUV.
I looked at him without arguing. My fingers were still shaking, but I extended my hand toward the nurse’s call button next to the bed and pressed it.
My father noticed the movement and took another step closer, acting as if he could still force me to lose that argument. I kept my hand by the button and didn’t say a word.
Then footsteps came down the hallway.
The door opened, and my father stood completely motionless when he saw who was standing at the entrance.
